Japan Trade Mission
8th July 2024 - 12th July 2024
The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) led a high-profile trade mission to Japan from 8th to 12th
July 2024, aligning with two significant space sector events: the SpaceTide Conference and the Space
Sustainability Summit. This mission provided an excellent platform for UK stakeholders, including Space
Hub Yorkshire, to strengthen international partnerships and showcase the UK’s cutting-edge capabilities in
space technology, sustainability, and innovation.
The mission commenced with a reception at the British Embassy Tokyo, where delegates were introduced to
the Japanese space sector and opportunities for collaboration. Over three days, the delegation actively
participated in the SpaceTide Conference, engaging with global leaders in panel discussions and networking
sessions, while promoting UK innovation at the event’s exhibition.
Space Hub Yorkshire highlighted the Yorkshire region’s burgeoning space ecosystem, emphasizing its
leadership in Earth observation technology, resilient communication systems, and advanced
manufacturing capabilities. The delegation showcased how Yorkshire’s expertise in these areas
contributes to global efforts in space exploration and sustainability, attracting significant interest from
Japanese stakeholders eager to collaborate on innovative projects.
The visit to IHI Corporation’s headquarters offered insights into Japan’s advanced aerospace manufacturing
capabilities and created opportunities for future cooperation in propulsion systems and satellite technology.
Delegates also visited iSpace, gaining a first-hand look at Japan’s advancements in lunar exploration and
discussing potential partnerships in commercial lunar missions.
The mission concluded with the Space Sustainability Summit, a two-day event focusing on the pressing
issue of sustainable space practices. UK delegates shared insights into the country’s leadership in space
debris mitigation and sustainable satellite operations while exploring collaborative solutions with
international stakeholders.
This trade mission strengthened ties between the UK and Japan, highlighted the UK’s expertise in the global
space sector, and opened avenues for future cooperation. Space Hub Yorkshire played a pivotal role in
promoting the Yorkshire space ecosystem, positioning it as a global leader in key technologies and
innovation. The delegation’s efforts drew interest from Japanese organizations for collaboration in Earth
observation, resilient communication systems, and manufacturing, underscoring Yorkshire’s critical role in
the international space industry.
By fostering dialogue, identifying opportunities, and showcasing the UK’s capabilities, the mission marked a
significant step forward in enhancing the UK’s position in the global space industry.
