SUMMARY:What comes next after CBES\, & what role for integrated climate-nature risk?
DESCRIPTION:This next event in the UK CGFI Leeds Connect series\, brings together banks\, insurers\, building societies\, leading climate and nature scientists\, and analytics businesses to explore the future of scenario analysis for climate and environmental risks. \nThe CGFI Leeds Innovation Hub is hosting What comes next after CBES\, and what role for integrated climate-nature risk analysis? on 8th October 2024\, together with the Integrating Finance and Biodiversity Programme (IFB) and the Resilient Planet Finance Lab. \nRegistration 12:45 pm | Sessions 13:15 pm | Networking Reception 5:00 – 6:30 pm \nJoin this event to understand the climate and environmental risks that financial institutions face and how science could be better integrated into risk management\, as well as to network and collaborate. The event builds upon CGFI’s research on lessons from the Bank of England’s Climate Biennial Exploratory Scenario exercise and on climate scenario analysis\, as well as the IFB’s report on the materiality of UK nature-related financial risks. \nThe event will include: \n\nKeynote speakers and panellists from across academia and industry sharing their insights on the climate and nature-related risks facing financial institutions\, and experience of how climate and nature risks are being integrated into decision-making.\nAn update of the current state of the climate and the latest thinking within the climate science community on informing physical risks. A climate expert from the Bank of England will reflect on the learnings from the CBES exercise\, the use of climate scenario analysis in the financial sector today\, and the journey to more decision useful scenario analysis in the future.\n\n\nCGFI colleagues will share takeaways from research on the CBES exercise\, with insights for banks and building societies who did not take part in the exercise. Following this we will hear from the researchers that led the UK’s landmark first assessment of the materiality of nature-related financial risks to the UK economy\, and from practitioners working to integrate climate and nature risks into their processes.\n\n\nA showcase of findings from CGFI’s joint research with the Resilient Planet Finance Lab at the University of Oxford\, the University of Leeds\, and the Climate Financial Risk Forum on building resilience and mobilising finance for adaptation. The event will conclude with a thought-provoking interactive session to determine the next course of action.

The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. These dates commemorate two events: \n\nOctober 4\, 1957: Launch of the first human-made Earth satellite\, Sputnik 1\, thus opening the way for space exploration\nOctober 10\, 1967: The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space\, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies.\n\nWhere and how is World Space Week celebrated?\nWorld Space Week consists of space education and outreach events held by space agencies\, aerospace companies\, schools\, planetaria\, museums\, and astronomy clubs around the world in a common timeframe. These synchronized space events attract greater public and media attention. World Space Week 2023 achieved record scale: \n\nMore than 16\,000 events\nEvents in 83 nations\n\nWorld Space Week is coordinated by the United Nations with the support of the World Space Week Association (WSWA). The WSWA leads a global team of National Coordinators\, who promote the celebration of World Space Week within their own countries. \nWhat are the goals of World Space Week?\n\nProvide unique leverage in space outreach and education\nEducate people around the world about the benefits that they receive from space\nEncourage greater use of space for sustainable economic development\nDemonstrate public support for space programs\nExcite young people about science\, technology\, engineering\, and math\nFoster international cooperation in space outreach and education

SUMMARY:Storm-Cloud: Observations of the Sky
DESCRIPTION:On 4 February 1884\, Victorian polymath John Ruskin delivered his controversial public lecture ‘Storm-Cloud of the Nineteenth Century’\, highlighting the disastrous results of nineteenth-century industrialisation\, the human impact on the environment\, and the effects of air pollution\, a ‘plague-wind’ on our health. \nLed by interdisciplinary artist Dr Tom Payne (Sheffield Hallam University)\, Storm-Cloud is a collaborative programme of research\, performance\, community engagement and exhibition that invites contemporary re-imaginings of\, and creative responses to\, Ruskin’s prophetic lecture. The initial stage of Storm-Cloud sees several separate events; \n\nFirst\, the initial performance event\, held at the Crucible Playhouse\, Sheffield\, on the 19th June 2024;\n\nA contemporary staging of John Ruskin’s prophetic public lecture ‘Storm-Cloud of the Nineteenth Century’ (1884) was performed at the Crucible Playhouse\, Sheffield – it was directed by Dr Tom Payne\, with motion design by Jake Goodall\, photography by Becky Payne\, original composition by David John Brady\, illustration by Billy Hughes and Penny McCarthy\, dramaturgical focus by Terry O’Connor\, digital media production by Anne Doncaster and Richard Mather\, and archival research by Ashley Gallant.\n\n\nSecond\, the dialogue event\, held at the Millenium Gallery\, Sheffield on the 20th June 2024;\n\nA special dialogue-event hosted at the Millennium Gallery\, Sheffield Museums\, following the performance of ‘Storm-Cloud: Observations of the Sky’ at the Tanya Moiseiwitsch Playhouse on the evening of 19 June. The dialogue event featured a vibrant mix of invited artists\, community organisers\, and researchers\, engaged in collaborative discussions that helped shape the next steps of Storm-Cloud.\nDr CH Wendy Tsai and Dr Christina Smith – Space Technology Leads working on the UK-EONS and GreenSpace projects within the Space Hub Yorkshire team – were two of the invited speakers at the dialogue event\, where they offered their contemporary research perspective on the climate crisis\, specifically from an Earth Observation perspective.\n\n\nThird\, the second performance event\, ‘Thrown into Form’\, at the Sheffield and District African Caribbean Community Association\, on the 12th October 2024;\n\nAn immersive performance in a former steel factory in Sheffield\, blending live action\, projection\, and a weather-inspired soundscape\, which furthers the collaboration of the first two events in defining an evolving performance that aimed to inspire further research on the climate crisis.\n\n\n\nSpace Hub Yorkshire\, as well as its funded projects UK-EONS and GreenSpace\, offered in-kind sponsorship through David John Brady (SHY Centre Coordinator) and Felix Barr (SHY Cluster Development Manager) offering their time and expertise on co-curating the first two events as part of the planning committee. In addition\, Dr Tsai and Dr Smith gave their time to prepare and present at the dialogue event on the 20th June. UK-EONS (UK Earth Observation Network for Sustainability) offered cash sponsorship\, to help use the Storm-Cloud platform to build the UK-EONS network and visibility\, specifically with a range of new audiences included the arts\, which is expected to offer new avenues into utilitisng Earth Observation technologies for sustainable and environmental goals. \n  \n \nOr you can download the report directly here: Storm-Cloud Event Report Form – External
