Research, innovation, and partnerships at Sheffield Hallam University are characterised by a focus on real-world impact, informed by local, regional, and national policy priorities, and addressing the cultural, economic, and social challenges facing society today. Their work is delivered by four Research Institutes, which promote engagement and collaboration with business, informing interventions through their research strengths and capabilities. These institutes include Industry and Innovation, Culture and Creativity, Social and Economic Research, and Health. The Research Institutes support several specialist centers that contain space-related expertise as well as research within specific academic departments. Key academic disciplines include Materials Science and Engineering, Surface Engineering and Advanced Coatings, Cybersecurity and Information Systems, Robotics and Human Interaction, Multimodal Imaging, and Product Design. There are various focuses related to space such as conventional and functional materials, electron microscopy, automation and robotics research, intelligence management, and many more. Sheffield Hallam is also home to the National HIPIMS Technology Centre (high power impulse magnetron sputtering), which represents the latest development in PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating deposition technology.
